About Udaipur ' s Lakes and Contributions of former kings of Udaipur - Travel With Chinmay - Udaipur

Just to enhance knowledge:
In 1562, Udai Singh built a dam across the Ahar river, creating Udai Sagar lake.

This was the first known global effort to improve an entire population’s living standards by managing a watershed.

Udai Singh ji became a pioneer in watershed area planning — though technical, it was a revolutionary and philanthropic act.

This set a standard for future rulers (Maharana successors) to build smaller lakes and dams to manage water supply.

Maharana Raj Singh ji later diverted a river to feed Jana Sagar lake — another world first, earning him the title “father of river diversion.”

The ultimate achievement was the creation of Fateh Sagar lake, the second largest lake, by Maharana Fateh Singh ji , a few miles north.

A noble and thoughtful man (Maharana Fateh Singh ji ) led this work.

A dam was built across the Ahar River to divert rainwater into Fateh Sagar Lake.

Artificial canals and waterways were made to connect all the rivers and lakes in the area.

Over six centuries, the projects were carefully planned so that:

Even though the lakes are at different heights and depths, their water levels become the same when full.

Extra water from one lake flows to another automatically.


Experts are amazed that such an early, successful river-linking project happened here.

Maharana Fateh Singh was not an engineer, but his dedication to helping his people made him push for this big project.

For him, it was natural to work hard for the good of his people, as part of his duty.

1562 में महाराणा उदयसिंह जी ने आहड़ नदी पर बांध बनाकर उदयसागर झील बनाई। यह जल प्रबंधन द्वारा पूरे जनसमुदाय के जीवन-स्तर सुधारने की पहली ज्ञात वैश्विक कोशिश थी। इसके बाद अन्य महाराणाओं ने भी झीलें और बांध बनाए। महाराणा राजसिंह ने नदी मोड़कर जनासागर झील भरी, जिससे उन्हें “रिवर डाइवर्जन के जनक” की उपाधि मिली। सबसे बड़ा कार्य महाराणा फतेहसिंह जी ने किया — फतेहसागर झील का निर्माण और जल-निकासी प्रणाली बनाकर झीलों को आपस में जोड़ने का .

छह शताब्दियों की योजना के तहत, अलग ऊंचाई-गहराई वाली झीलों का जल स्तर समान रहता है और एक झील का अतिरिक्त पानी खुद-ब-खुद दूसरी में चला जाता है। यह नदी-जोड़ परियोजना इतनी पुरानी और सफल थी कि आज भी विशेषज्ञ हैरान हैं। महाराणा फतेहसिंह जी  इंजीनियर नहीं थे, लेकिन प्रजा के हित में उनकी निष्ठा ने उन्हें यह काम करने के लिए प्रेरित किया।
